World Record Requirements
Concept2 reserves the right not to accept a row as a record. For more information contact ranking@concept2.com.
Please let us know if you have broken a record and met the requirements outlined on this page so we can confirm your row and enter the new record on our records page. We do not check the rankings for new results on a daily basis and your notification is appreciated. Thanks!
All records must be single distance or timed pieces (no interval pieces) started from a non-moving flywheel. Accelerated starts from moving flywheels during intervals are not accepted as record times. The indoor rower must be on a level surface.
Weight Requirements
In accordance with regulations from on-water events and indoor rowing championships around the world, lightweights must be weighed in no earlier than two hours before their race. Records from lightweights weighed prior to two hours before their race will not be recognized.
- Lightweight Women: <= 135lbs (61.5kg)
- Heavyweight Women: > 135 lbs (61.6kg)
- Lightweight Men: <= 165lbs (75kg)
- Heavyweight Men: > 165lbs (75kg)
2000 Meters
All 2000 meter record-breaking times must be rowed at a Concept2 sanctioned indoor rowing event with witnesses present. In addition all 2000 meter record-breaking times must be rowed on Concept2 Indoor Rowers without Slides.
PM3/PM4 Verification Code
Use your PM3 or PM4 to verify any rankable result entered into the ranking, as follows:
- Ensure your PM is running the latest version of firmware.
- Ensure that the date and time on your PM3/PM4 is accurate.
- Set up and row your piece, taking care to set up your workout correctly.
- After you have rowed your piece, select
(View Detail) for the piece.
- On the View Detail screen (either for a workout on the LogCard or in PM Memory), the 4th gray button on the right has no action associated with it. Press this button TWICE. A 16-digit code is displayed in the upper right hand corner of the monitor.
- Enter your piece in your Online Logbook, and then click
to edit the piece.
- Carefully review all the information for your piece. The distance, date and time should appear exactly as it does in the PM or LogCard memory, including tenths of a second. In the PM3/PM4 Verification of Result section, enter your verification code from your Performance Monitor exactly as it appears on your PM.
- Click Update.
- Now submit your piece to the online ranking. The result Source will be listed as "IND_V" (verified).
Any questions or difficulties, please email ranking@concept2.com.

- 500 meters
- 1000 meters
- 5000 meters
- 6000 meters
- 10,000 meters

Team Categories
We recognize records in the following categories for team size:
- Tandem (2–person)
- Small team (3–10 people)
- Large team (over 10 people)
In each of these categories, the team may be men's, women's, or mixed (at least 1/3 men and 1/3 women) and heavyweight or lightweight. Lightweight teams must consist of all lightweight members. Any records achieved by a team of both heavyweight and lightweight rowers will count as a heavyweight record. See above for weight requirements.
Additionally, we recognize records for tandem rows in 10–year age categories: 19 & under, 20–29, 30–39, etc. The age of the younger team member determines the age category of the record, apart from 19 & under where both team members must be in the age category.
Individual Categories
We recognize records for individuals in 10–year age categories: 19 & under, 20–29, 30–39, etc. in both heavyweight and lightweight categories for men and women. Heavyweight is over 165 lbs for men, over 135 lbs for women. Weight should be taken no earlier than two (2) hours before the row.
World records can be set in the same sitting for the Individual Longest Continual Row, the Individual 24-Hour Row and/or the Individual Million Meter Row; however, you must meet the all of the requirements for the records you are attempting. See the requirements for each category below.
- Use a single Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3 or PM4).
- On a PM3 or PM4, you'll need to set the monitor using Variable Intervals. On the PM3/PM4 Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable. This will enable you to set 10 distance intervals of 99,999 meters and one distance interval of 10 meters with rest intervals of 0:00. If using a PM3, it is recommended that you upgrade to a PM3 firmware version of 88 or above.
- On a PM2, the monitor will count meters up to 99,999, then start at 0 again, so be sure to keep track of the flips back to 0. You'll need 10 of them!
- The rules are simple: the wheel cannot stop spinning ever until one million meters is reached.
- Tandem (2-person) attempts must have both rowers rowing at least 400,000 meters to be considered a world record.
- Keep a record of who rows, when they row, and what the Performance Monitor reads (meters) when they start and end their stint on the indoor rower. Also be sure to record the total numbers of people who row in the record attempt. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
- Send us your results in the form of a LogCard .csv file or your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.
- New records will be recognized with a special certificate of achievement and a Concept2 banner signed by the Concept2 staff. Records will also posted here on the website.
- Special High School/Club 4-Erg Million Meter Team Row Protocol:
- All participants must be secondary school students and belong to the same club/school.
- Equipment: Four indoor rowers, PM3 or PM4 monitors with Venue Racing software.
- If your team is mixed, two of the indoor rowers will be used by girls and two of the indoor rowers used by boys at all times (grace given to moments of transition when for a few strokes more of one gender would be on than the other).
- There is no cap on the number of students participating.
- Use the Venue Racing software with PM3 or PM4 monitors and follow the instructions below.
- Final time will be recorded when the last of the four indoor rowers finishes.
- Setting Up a 4-Erg Million Meter Team Row with Venue Racing Software::
- Download and install Venue Racing on a PC.
- Hook up all four monitors to that PC as described in the Venue Racing support section of our website.
- From the Racing Control Panel, click New to set up a new race.
- Set the distance to 250,000 meters.
- Select racing as singles.
- Set the number of boats in the race to 4.
- Name each boat if you want.
- Save the setup.
- After it's been saved, use Open to access the race setup you've just created.
- Alternately, you could also try setting up the race as two doubles of 50,000 meters.
- As it says above, the final time will be recorded when the last of the four indoor rowers finishes.
- We recommend that you set up a similar race of shorter distance to test this out and become familiar with how it works and how you will organize your teams.
- Use a Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3 or PM4).
Be aware that the monitor will automatically shut down after about 2 minutes of inactivity, so you will have to reset the monitor after rest breaks unless you have someone press the Change Display button to keep the PM alive.
- On a PM2, the monitor will count meters up to 99,999, then start at 0 again, so be sure to keep track of the flips back to 0. You'll need 10 of them!
- It IS allowable, indeed necessary, for the wheel to stop spinning a number of times before the million meters are reached. Obviously, your elapsed time must also include all the time that the wheel is not spinning, so you will need to figure out how best to balance your work time and rest time to optimize the rate at which you can accumulate meters.
- Keep a record of your row, including the start time and finish time of each rowing session, and the meters rowed in each session. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
- Send us your results in the form of a LogCard .csv file or your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.
- New records will be recognized with a special certificate of achievement, a Concept2 T-shirt and a pair of Concept2 Rowing Shorts. Records will also posted here on the website.
- Use a single Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3 or PM4).
- On the PM3/PM4 Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable. This will enable you to set a single time interval of 24 hours, with a rest interval of 0:00. If using a PM3, it is recommended that you upgrade to a PM3 firmware version of 88 or above. Be aware that the monitor will automatically shut down after about 2 minutes of inactivity, so you will have to reset the monitor after rest breaks unless you have someone press the Change Display button to keep the PM alive.
- The PM2 monitor will count meters up to 99,999, then start at 0 again, so be sure to keep track of the flips back to 0.
- The rules are simple: the wheel cannot stop spinning ever until 24 hours has elapsed.
- Tandem (2-person) attempts must have both rowers rowing at least 40% of the time to be considered a world record.
- Keep a record of your row. Teams should keep a record of who rows, and how long and how far they row, and cumulative meters rowed. Also be sure to record the total numbers of people who row in the record attempt. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
- Send us your results in the form of a LogCard .csv file or your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.
- New records will be recognized with a certificate and a Concept2 banner. Records will also be posted here on the website.
- Use a Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3 or PM4).
- The PM3 or PM4 monitor will count up to 50,000 before it flips back to 0. OR on the PM3/PM4 Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable.
- Individuals are required to accumulate some number of meters within each hour of the 24 hours in order for the attempt to qualify as a 24 hour row.
- It IS allowable, indeed necessary, for the wheel to stop spinning a number of times before the row is over. Obviously, if you rest too long, you have less time to accumulate meters; on the other hand, too little rest may result in premature exhaustion! You will need to determine the optimum amount of rest for yourself.
- Keep a record of your row. You should have your support crew keep a record of how long (time) and how far (meters) you row each hour, and of course cumulative meters rowed. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
- Send us your results in the form of a LogCard .csv file or your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.

- Use a single Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3 or PM4).
- The PM3 or PM4 monitor will count up to 50,000 before it flips back to 0.
- The PM2 monitor will count meters up to 99,999, then start at 0 again, so be sure to keep track of the flips back to 0.
- The rules are simple: the wheel cannot stop spinning until you decide to end your record attempt.
- Tandem (2-person) attempts must have both rowers rowing at least 40% of the time to be considered a world record.
- Keep a record of who rows, when they row, and what the Performance Monitor reads (meters) when they start and end their stint on the indoor rower. Also be sure to record the total numbers of people who row in the record attempt. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.

- It IS allowable, indeed necessary, for the wheel to stop spinning a number of times before the row is over. Individuals are allowed to take up to 10 minutes of rest per hour because we understand that it will be necessary to eat and visit the bathroom. In order to call this a "continuous" row, you must row at least 50 minutes out of each hour. Any rest time taken counts toward your elapsed time.
- Keep a record of your row. Individuals should have their support crew keep a record of how long (time) and how far (meters) they row each hour, and of course cumulative meters rowed. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
- Be sure to eat, drink and stretch as you progress through your attempt!
- Send us your results in the form of a LogCard .csv file or your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.

- Use a single Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3 or PM4).
- If using a PM2, set the monitor for 99,999 meters (that's as high as it goes).
- If using a PM3/PM4, on the PM3/PM4 Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable. This will enable you to set a single Distance interval of 100,000 meters, with a rest interval of 0:00.
- The rules are simple: the wheel cannot stop spinning ever until 100,000 meters are reached.
- Tandem (2-person) attempts must have both rowers rowing at least 40,000 meters or more each to be considered a world record.
